Recently named the second most beautiful beach in North America, Bahia Honda
(meaning deep bay in Spanish) not only provides white sandy beaches; tropical
vegetation and a great variety of bird life are included in this
mini-paradise. Complete with two separate beaches, marina, dive shop, cabins
and campsites, this park is certainly one of the busiest in the state. Daily
snorkel trips to Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary provide an excellent means
of observing and enjoying the beautiful reefs of the Florida Keys.

One
particularly unique attraction, the Bat Tower, has a quirky history. The Bat
Tower is located on Lower Sugarloaf Key at Mile Marker 17. Originally owned by
an English sponge farmer names C.W. Chase, the tower property was sold to
Richter C. Perky. Mr. Perky intended to establish a fishing camp there. In
1929, as a solution to the pesky mosquito problem, Perky built a bat tower
thereby housing the mosquito-eaters (sort of an early version of a bug
zapper). Unfortunately, Mr. Perky's thousands of dollars flew off as quickly
as the bats did when he placed the bats in his tower. The Bat Tower now stands
as a monument to one man's folly.

sinkhole from the old railroad days has blossomed into a watery wildlife
attraction in the heart of the National Key Deer Refuge. The Blue Hole harbors
alligators, turtles and freshwater fish. There is an alligator observation
area and a walking trail.

beautiful coral formation is named after the H.M.S. Looe, a British ship that
foundered on the coral in 1744. Brightly colored tropical fish mingle amid sea
fans and coral canyons under the protection of the Florida Keys National

divers.

The National
Key Deer Refuge encompasses 2,300 acres of land on Big Pine Key. The refuge is
the primary home of the famous Key deer, a small subspecies of the Virginia
white tail deer. The deer are best observed in the early morning and early
evening hours when they come out of the woods to nibble on vegetation along
the side of roads and trails. Please note that it is illegal to feed Key deer.
While driving through Key deer country please be careful to observe the
special speed limits.
